Dynamo National Stadium in Minsk – a modern arena anchored with Rawlplug products
From the Olympic Games to city festivals – Belarus’ largest stadium underwent a major renovation using Rawlplug solutions tailored to a structure with a unique historical legacy.
A stadium with history
The Dynamo National Olympic Stadium in Minsk is an icon of Belarusian sport and the country’s largest facility of its kind. It was originally built in 1934 at the initiative of the Belarusian Proletarian Sports Society “Dynamo” – an organisation under the authority of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR. At the time, every member of the society was obliged to personally contribute to the construction by working at least 100 hours on site.
Initially accommodating 12,000 spectators, the stadium underwent its first expansion in 1939. During World War II, it was almost completely destroyed – only the ruins of the stands remained, with all equipment and infrastructure lost in a fire. Reconstruction began in 1946, and the seating capacity was increased to 35,000. The 1980s marked a peak in the stadium’s history – it hosted football matches during the 1980 Moscow Olympics, drawing crowds of up to 50,000 spectators.
Renovation with respect for heritage
In 2018, a comprehensive renovation of the stadium was completed. The goal was to combine modern standards with preservation of the original architectural form, so familiar and dear to the citizens of Minsk. Designers faced the challenge of maintaining the historic look of the arena while upgrading it to meet the requirements of international sporting federations.
As a result, the stadium was awarded a first-class certificate by the IAAF (now World Athletics), making it eligible to host top-level international athletics events. The reopening ceremony took place on 21 June 2018.
