Expansion of the Bucharest Metro – a transport landmark of Romania’s capital!
The Bucharest Metro is one of the most important underground railway networks in Central and Eastern Europe, serving the residents of Romania’s capital. Since the opening of its first line in 1979, the system has undergone continuous expansion, providing fast and convenient transportation.
Expansion of Line M5 – new opportunities for residents
Currently operated by Metrorex, the Bucharest Metro spans 69.3 km of tracks with 51 stations, transporting approximately 500,000 passengers daily. In contrast, the Budapest surface transport system (RATB) handles 2,650,000 passengers per day.
The metro expansion project focused on extending Line M5 along the Universitate – Pantelimon section, constructing the Pantelimon 2 depot, and acquiring 30 new trains. The newly built section has connected the city center to its eastern districts, easing surface transport congestion and reducing traffic bottlenecks.
As a result of the expansion, annual metro ridership increased by 34 million passengers, reaching a total of 260 million and offering a viable alternative for 350,000 residents. The new metro section has helped reduce road traffic, noise pollution, and vehicle emissions in Bucharest.
Rawlplug technologies in the expansion of the Bucharest Metro
During the construction of Line M5, Rawlplug’s advanced R-KEX-II epoxy resin anchors were used to reinforce foundations and stabilize the structure. Over 9,300 cartridges of 600 ml epoxy adhesive were applied in combination with threaded rods, ensuring durability and reliability essential for large-scale infrastructure projects.
What makes R-KEX-II epoxy resin anchors stand out?
- Resistance to dynamic loads and seismic approval (C1 and C2 classification), making them suitable for transport infrastructure applications.
- Versatility in dry, wet, and water-filled substrates, allowing installation in challenging metro construction conditions.
- Short curing time, enabling efficient workflow and faster project completion.
- Certified for use with threaded rods in cracked and non-cracked concrete (EAD 330499-02-0601), with a service life of up to 100 years.
