Sustainable Rawlplug. Welcome to our bug hotels!

As surely befits a company operating in the construction industry, we have taken care of the local mason bees, commonly recognised as flying wall construction specialists.

Here’s a fun fact: the red mason bee builds its nests in crevices, and each of such nests consists of several rooms divided by tiny mud walls. To this end, it uses hollow stems, bark peeling away, and all other nooks and crannies of nature, but also special boxes hung by people who understand the value of having such an effective pollinator as a neighbour.

And since we count ourselves among the latter, we have recently put up ten special bug hotels around the premises of Rawlplug’s Wrocław headquarters: 7 in the vicinity of the flower meadow on the bank of the Oder, and 3 at the facility entrance. All of them are made of solid hardwood (they are FSC-certified) and are perfectly suitable for habitation by mason bees and other species of Hymenoptera, as confirmed by the positive recommendation received from the Institute of Zoology of the Poznań University of Life Sciences. We have placed them in the most favourable setting, namely in well sunlit spots protected from rain.

The installation of the bug hotels is one of Rawlplug’s numerous activities aligned with the idea of sustainable development. Just as a reminder: last year, field research was conducted all around the premises of our Wrocław headquarters by the scientists from the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the University of Wrocław, who subsequently produced a special report comprising, among other aspects, an inventory of the plant and animal species found in the immediate vicinity of our seat, along with detailed guidelines for further cooperation with the local environment.

  • You can read more about the report prepared by the biologists from the University of Wroclaw HERE.
  • We would also like to encourage you to listen to the Rawlercoaster podcast featuring Marcin Kadej, PhD, and Joanna Furmankiewicz, PhD, who were among the scientists surveying the insects, bats, and mammals inhabiting the territory neighbouring on Rawlplug’s premises last year.
