Plasterboard partition wall

Why is the use of plasterboard the best way to construct partition walls? Plasterboard is a versatile building material that is widely used in modern construction. Thanks to their properties, different types of plasterboard are ideal for quick and effective interior design. The use of plasterboard includes not only the installation of partition walls, but also suspended ceilings, attic development, creating an even, ready-to-finish wall surface and creating aesthetic arrangement elements. These boards are lightweight, easy to process and install, while also providing good acoustic and fire properties, making them a versatile solution for both residential and commercial buildings.

What is the drywall production process? The production process plasterboard begins with the preparation of gypsum, which is the main component of these boards. Natural or synthetic gypsum is subjected to heat treatment to remove moisture from it and obtain calcium sulfate hemihydrate (burnt gypsum). Then the gypsum is mixed with water and additives that improve the properties of the material, and then the mass is poured between two layers of special cardboard paper. After cooling, the board is formed, pressed and dried in an oven, and after cooling, the gypsum board is cut to standard sizes.

Did you know?

The ancestor of plasterboard, which is so popular today, was the "lath" system of light construction used in the USA in the 19th century. Wooden frames of internal walls were erected there, which were covered with plaster on both sides.

Drywall installation technologies

What gypsum board installation technologies do experts recommend? Construction experts recommend two main methods of fixing plasterboards: profile mounting and frameless installation. Installation on profiles, i.e. on a structure made of metal profiles, is the most commonly used method for erecting partition walls. It allows for a stable, durable structure, which additionally allows for electrical or plumbing installations to be carried out inside the partition constructed in this way.

Frameless installation, on the other hand, involves the direct bonding of plasterboard to the load-bearing wall using special mounting adhesives. This method is faster and works well for leveling surfaces, although it does not provide the possibility of hiding the installation. Both mounting methods have their advantages and the choice of the right one depends on the specifics of the project and the needs of the user.

Installation of gypsum boards on profiles

Which profiles for the boards? Installation on a metal frame (profiles) of plasterboard is one of the most popular methods due to the stability and flexibility of the structure. Various types of metal profiles are used for this type of installation, including CW gypsum cardboard profiles  (for partition walls), UW (perimeter profiles), and CD and UD profiles, which are used for suspended ceilings. A much rarer solution is mounting on a wooden frame (wooden profiles). The profiles are attached to the walls, floor and ceiling, creating a frame for the entire structure. Nails or wall plugs are most often used to install profiles on concrete walls. A professional solution that allows for quick and trouble-free installation of profiles with the use of nails is R-SC40II gasnailer - it will be especially useful where there are many profiles to be fastened, and we care about efficiency and assembly efficiency.

To fix the plasterboards on the profiles, special plasterboard screws, which guarantee a durable and secure connection. To speed up the installation and ensure precision, it is recommended to use a plasterboard screwdriver with a suitable tip to facilitate quick and even screwing without the risk of damaging the board surface. The structure prepared in this way is durable, and at the same time allows for various installations inside the walls, and thus - comprehensive installation of partition walls.

Frameless installation of gypsum boards

Frameless installation of gypsum boards is a quick and effective method used primarily for finishing, when a supporting structure made of profiles is not required. The use of plasterboard is a proven method, e.g. to obtain smooth walls without plastering. Frameless assembly is an ideal solution primarily where the speed of work, cleanliness and simplicity of execution are important, and additionally allows for optimal use of space, minimizing the thickness of the entire structure.

Fastening with gypsum adhesive - gluing the boards to the wall

Most often, gypsum boards are mounted directly on the walls with gypsum glue or special mounting foam. The technology of fixing to gypsum glue consists in applying glue points to the back side of the board, and then attaching it to the load-bearing wall, aligning it with a spirit level. Is gluing boards to the wall a good method? The gypsum adhesive attachment provides a strong and durable bond, with the added benefit of being able to gently correct the position of the board before it sets.

Mounting with mounting foam - gypsum boards on the wall

An alternative to adhesive is polyurethane foam, which is gaining popularity due to its ease of use and short drying time. The mounting foam is applied directly to the board and then fixed to the wall, obtaining a solid connection after just a few minutes. This method is particularly useful for uneven surfaces, as the foam adapts better to cavities and unevenness, providing an even finish surface.

Installation plasterboard boards by interconnection

Methods of fixing boards - gluing plasterboard or foam mounting are methods that will only work when joining large flat surfaces. However, permanently embedding gypsum plasterboard with each other is a crucial stage in many construction and renovation projects. Here are some situations in which it may be necessary to connect two plasterboards:

  1. Adding a partition wall - extending or supplementing an existing partition wall.
  2. Increasing the thickness of the wall - adding an additional plasterboard; greater thickness of plasterboard improves the acoustic or thermal properties of the partition.
  3. Creating recesses and shelves - connecting smaller elements of plasterboards without making a support rack.
  4. Renovation of existing walls - combining new panels with those already installed where they need to be supplemented or replaced.
  5. Decorative structures - joining boards to create various decorative structures, such as ceiling coffers or various forms of wall finishing.

R-FPP - screw for interconnecting plasterboards

These are situations in which it is worth using appropriate assembly techniques to ensure durability and aesthetics. In the process of permanent interconnection of plasterboards, the R-FPP screw from Rawlplug's offer will work well, you can choose the R-FPP screw in a grey phosphated.

R-FPP drywall screws guarantee a wide range of flexibility in working with plasterboards. They will work especially well where we are not sure where exactly the load-bearing profiles in the partition wall structure are located, and we need to add or supplement a ready-made installation. Thanks to their design – sharp tip and self-drilling thread – the screws easily penetrate the surface of the boards, ensuring a solid connection without the risk of damage to the material.

R-FPP screws are also a guarantee of versatility. In addition to the trouble-free connection of two boards, they can also cope with the profile, which also allows for the skeletal assembly of the panels with their use, and thus - free conduct of various types of assembly work.

The use of R-FPP screws allows for a quick and efficient surface finish without having to search for support profiles, which saves time and minimizes the risk of assembly errors. The surface of the plasterboard remains undamaged - the flat screw head is perfectly flush with the plasterboard plane. Thanks to this solution, the installation of the panels becomes simpler, and the final aesthetic and functional effect – fully satisfactory.

The installation process requires regular placement of the screws: it is recommended that the spacing between them is about 20-25 cm along the edge of the hob and 30 cm on the rest of the surface. An important tool during this process is a screwdriver or a screwdriver with depth adjustment, which allows for precise and even seating of the screws. This prevents the screws from being over-recessed, which could damage the structure of the board, while them to sit in a stable position.

  1. Place the new plasterboard in the place where it is installed.
  2. Place the screw against the surface of the hob and screw in using a screwdriver or screwdriver. Screwing the plate will be stable even though it is not attached to the support frame.
  3. Correct fastening of a standard 1.2 m x 2.6 m plasterboard requires the use of approx. 25 screws.

After fixing the boards, the next step is to apply putty to the places where the boards are fixed and the boards are joined. Filling board joints should be done with the use of special fillers and reinforcing tapes, which strengthen the joints and eliminate the risk of cracks in the future. After the putty has dried, the surface can be smoothed with sandpaper, which allows you to obtain a perfectly smooth and even surface ready for further finishing work, such as painting or wallpapering.
