As part of the modernisation project for the meteorological radar in Brzuchania, we provided reliable solutions that contributed to upgrading one of the most important facilities in the Polrad network. How did this remarkable collaboration unfold, and which products played a key role?

In February 2004, as part of the flood damage mitigation project, the meteorological radar in Brzuchania was commissioned. It became the final component completing the Polish network of meteorological radars known as Polrad. The Doppler radar METEOR 500C by Gematronik, with a range of 250 km, had supported Poland’s atmospheric monitoring system since 2004. After nearly 20 years of intensive operation, the facility required modernisation to meet contemporary technological standards.

Technology in the service of safety

The construction of the Polrad radar network, funded by a World Bank loan, was a response to the growing need for precise monitoring of weather phenomena such as heavy rainfall and air turbulence. From its inception, the system has served hydrologists, meteorologists, emergency services, as well as industries like aviation and water management.

Did you know?

The Polrad radar network not only determines rainfall intensity but also analyses wind direction and speed, detects mesocyclones and turbulence, and enables the preparation of short-term heavy rain warnings.

A new standard after 20 years

Since 2020, Poland has embarked on a programme to modernise its radar network, including the facility in Brzuchania. In early 2024, a highly innovative dual-polarisation radar was installed, significantly enhancing the quality of collected data.

The modernisation involved demolishing the old tower and constructing a new structure, elevated by 15 metres to eliminate terrain obstacles that had emerged in recent years. The implementation of this new device marks a milestone in the development of Poland's meteorological infrastructure, enabling even more precise forecasts and warnings.

Modernisation and Rawlplug's role

Rawlplug played a significant role in the radar modernisation project by providing technical solutions and products that supported the contractor at every stage of the process. In collaboration with the project manager, alpine specialists, and the general contractor, proven fastening systems were selected and tailored to the specific requirements of the structure based on detailed calculations.

These precisely conducted calculations, which accounted for project data and the investor’s requirements, enabled the creation of a durable and safe radar tower structure. Additionally, the construction process was supported by the sliding concrete casting method, ensuring stability and resistance to environmental conditions. Below is the list of products used during the modernisation.

Good to know!

POLRAD – the Polish network of meteorological radars covering the entire country – provides critical data for meteorological and hydrological models. Managed by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW), this network serves not only an operational role but also supports research activities.

Investing in the future

The modernisation of the meteorological radar in Brzuchania is an example of how advanced technologies and Rawlplug's years of experience contribute to the successful execution of projects with critical importance for safety and infrastructure development. Thanks to these efforts, Poland's radar system is ready for decades of reliable operation!
