Design of the UNO universal plug

The UNO universal plug from Rawlplug stands out with its advanced design, which ensures robustness and versatility of installation in various materials. The UNO is made of nylon – a durable yet flexible material, thanks to which it provides durable fixing effects. Its key features include:

  • Anti-slip collar, which prevents the plug from moving in the hole and guarantees fixing stability.
  • Unique mechanism of expansion which startsnot at the bottom of the hole, as in the case of most fixings, but at the hole entrance. This design makes the plug suitable for installation even in delicate and thin substrates.
  • Anti-rotation fins – they prevent the sleeve from twisting in the hole, which is particularly important when installing in unstable holes (e.g. those left after having dismantled elements previously fixed).
  • The geometry of the UNO universal plug ensures maximum expansion and grip in all substrates.
  • Short length – the UNO can also be set in thin walls and plasterboard.
  • Two symmetrical halves of the sleeve which, combined with the two-way expansion mechanism, allow high load capacities to be achieved.

Did you know?

Rawlplug's product range also includes the Tiber UNO – the world's first wall plug made from 70% wood.

Multi-purpose plug – what surfaces is the UNO suited for?

The nylon UNO plug is designed for use in virtually all construction materials, including: concrete, ceramic brick, silicate brick, natural stone, aerated concrete, or plasterboard. Each of these materials is characterised by a different structure and strength, and yet you can install the UNO universal plug in any substrate with the confidence that you will produce a stable and secure fixing. This means you don't have to waste time thinking which plug to choose for a given substrate, since the UNO will always be the right solution.

Universal plugs – when are they worth using?

A multi-purpose plug will always work if you are not sure which fixing to use. For example, let’s assume that you are performing installation work in an old building, where it is difficult to determine the substrate type. Additionally, old brick may be less resistant to damage, so the right anchorage type proves crucial to ensure secure installation. Another sample application of a universal plug is anchoring in an unstable or worn hole. With its inverted expansion zone, the UNO is a perfect solution in this case as well.

Typical applications of the UNO plug

The following is a list of model applications of universal plugs:

  • Wall or ceiling mounting – e.g. lamps, curtain rods, roller blinds, etc.
  • Lighting systems
  • Installation of light-weight radiators, cabinets, and wall brackets (frame fixings are recommended for higher loads)
  • Wall mounting of fixtures and decorations, such as mirrors, photo frames, flowerbeds, etc.
  • Installation of suspended ceilings
  • Installation of electrical systems

Nylon universal plugs – advantages of use

The unique design of the UNO universal plug makes it a fixing suited for a wide range of applications. The main benefits our solution provides are as follows:

  • Secure wall mounting regardless of the substrate type. You don’t have to think about the substrate in which you are installing. You save time, money, and space (you don’t have to buy and store several types of plugs).
  • The screw and sleeve diameter can be selected according to installation specifics. Rawlplug’s product range includes the UNO plugs with a diameter of 5 to 10 mm. Additionally, you can also choose the right screw length and diameter, which makes it easy to match the specific fixing to the application at hand.
  • Secure fixing – every time. The UNO is a quick fixing solution, so you don’t have to worry about making a mistake during installation, and the final anchorage will always be stable and secure.

Universal wall plugs – rules to follow while selecting the drill bit and screw diameter

Rawlplug delivers stand-alone UNO sleeves or the universal plugs paired with a screw. Depending on the diameter, the plugs differ in colour, making them very easy to distinguish from one another when stored, for example, in a toolbox. When preparing to install a universal plug, remember that the diameter of the pre-drilled hole must be identical as that of the fixing sleeve.

The screw diameter and length depend on the element to be fixed, namely its weight and thickness. When ordering products on the eRawlplug platform, you can conveniently and quickly check which screw type matches the selected diameter of the UNO sleeve.

Considering how easy it is to use, the UNO is also referred to as a quick fixing solution. The installation proceeds as follows.

Drill a hole to a diameter matching that of the plug. Remember to use a drill bit suited for the kind of substrate in which the hole is to be made.

Remove dust and drillings from the hole using a hole cleaning brush four times.

Place the UNO plug in the hole and tap it lightly with a hammer so that the sleeve comes flush with the substrate.

Place the fixture against the substrate and tighten it with a screw of the appropriate diameter and length. You can use a power screwdriver to speed up the work.
